37. A Kind of Cult of the Passions. You gloomy people and philosophical slowworms speak of the terrible character of the human passions in order to indict the character of the whole essence of the world. As though wherever there has been passion, there had also been terror! As though this kind of terror had to exist perpetually in the world! Through neglect in small matters, through a lack of self-observation and of observing those who are to be educated, you yourselves have allowed the passions to grow into such monsters that even the word “passion” now fills you with fear! It was within your power, and remains within ours, to deprive the passions of their terrible character and to forestall them in such a way that they do not become devastating torrents. One should not inflate one’s mistakes into eternal fatalities; rather, let us honestly share in the task of transforming all the passions of humanity into joys.
