95. Unsere Prosa.

95. Our Prose. None of the present-day cultured peoples has prose as bad as the Germans; and when witty and fastidious Frenchmen say that there is no German prose, one really ought not to take offence, since it is more politely meant than we deserve. If one seeks the reasons, one arrives in the end at the curious conclusion that the German knows only improvised prose and has no conception whatever of any other kind. It sounds almost incomprehensible to him when an Italian says that prose is more difficult than poetry by precisely the degree to which depicting naked beauty is more difficult for the sculptor than depicting clothed beauty. Verse, image, rhythm, and rhyme must be worked at honestly: even the German understands this and is not inclined to place a particularly high value on extemporaneous poetry. But to work on a page of prose as on a statue? It is as though someone were telling him something from the land of fables.

95. Notre prose.
