5. The morality of breeding and the morality of taming are entirely worthy of each other in the means by which they prevail. We may establish as our supreme proposition that, to make morality, one must possess an unconditional will to its opposite. This is the great, uncanny problem I have pursued longest: the psychology of humanity’s “improvers.” A small and fundamentally modest fact, that of the so-called pia fraus, first gave me access to this problem: the pia fraus, the hereditary possession of all philosophers and priests who “improved” humanity. Neither Manu, Plato, Confucius, nor the Jewish and Christian teachers ever doubted their right to lie. They did not doubt very different rights either... Expressed as a formula, one might say: all means hitherto intended to make humanity moral were immoral through and through.
