Was hat man gethan? Aber was will man? nochmals gefragt. Will man einen Zweck, muss man auch die Mittel wollen: will man Sklaven, so ist man ein Narr, wenn man sie zu Herrn erzieht. -

40. The workers’ question. The stupidity, fundamentally the degeneration of instinct, which today is the cause of all stupidities, lies in the fact that there is a workers’ question. One does not ask questions about certain things: first imperative of instinct. I simply cannot see what one intends to do with the European worker after first making a question out of him. He is far too well off not to ask for more step by step, and to ask more immodestly. In the end he has the great number on his side. The hope is entirely gone that a modest and self-sufficient kind of human being, a Chinese type, might here develop into a class: and this would have made sense, this would simply have been a necessity. What has been done? Everything needed to destroy even the precondition for it in the bud. With the most irresponsible thoughtlessness, the instincts by virtue of which a worker is possible as a class, is possible to himself, have been utterly destroyed. The worker has been made fit for military service; he has been given the right of coalition, the political franchise: what wonder if the worker already experiences his existence today as a state of distress (expressed morally, as an injustice)? But what is wanted? I ask again. If one wants an end, one must also want the means: if one wants slaves, one is a fool to educate them to be masters.
