Τὴν μὲν αἰτίαν, δι’ ἣν μετὰ τὸ λογικὸν τῆς φιλοσοφίας μέρος εἰς ἐπίσκεψιν ἡμῖν ἄγεται τὸ φυσικόν, καίπερ χρόνῳ τῶν ἄλλων προήκειν δοκοῦν, ἀνώτερον ὑπεμνήσαμεν (adv. dogm. I sqq.)· τὸν αὐτὸν δὲ τρόπον τῆς πάλιν ἐνταῦθα συστησόμεθα, οὐκ ἐμβραδύνοντες τοῖς κατὰ μέρος, ὁποῖόν τι πεποιήκασιν οἱ περὶ τὸν Κλειτόμαχον καὶ ὁ λοιπὸς τῶν Ἀκαδημαϊκῶν χορός (εἰς ἀλλοτρίαν ἐμβάντες καὶ ἐπὶ συγχωρήσει τῶν ἑτεροίως δογματιζομένων ποιούμενοι τοὺς λόγους ἀμέτρως ἐμήκυναν τὴν ἀντίρρησιν), ἀλλὰ τὰ κυριώτατα καὶ τὰ συνεκτικώτατα κινοῦντες, ἐν οἶς ἠπορημένα ἕξομεν καὶ τὰ λοιπά.

We recalled above (Against the Dogmatists I ff.) the reason why, after the logical part of philosophy, the physical part is brought under our investigation, although it seems chronologically to precede the others. We shall again proceed here in the same way, without lingering over particular points as Clitomachus and the rest of the Academic chorus did. By entering foreign territory and framing their arguments upon concessions from those who held different doctrines, they prolonged their refutation beyond measure. Instead, we shall challenge the most authoritative and fundamental points, in which the rest too will be found to be open to question.

La raison pour laquelle, après la partie logique de la philosophie, c’est la partie physique qui est soumise à notre examen, bien qu’elle semble précéder les autres dans le temps, nous l’avons rappelée plus haut (adv. dogm. I sqq.). Nous l’exposerons ici encore de la même manière, sans nous attarder aux questions particulières, comme l’ont fait Clitomaque et tout le reste du chœur des Académiciens. Ceux-ci, s’étant engagés sur un terrain étranger et ayant développé leurs arguments en concédant les doctrines de leurs adversaires, ont démesurément prolongé la réfutation. Nous mettrons plutôt en mouvement les points les plus essentiels et les plus fondamentaux, puisque, une fois ceux-ci rendus problématiques, nous aurons aussi mis en difficulté tous les autres.
