ἐκ τούτων ἐστὶ συμφανές· λοιπὸν δέ, ἐπεὶ οἱ πλείους ὡμολογηκόσιν αὐτὸ ἄτεχνον εἶναι καὶ ἐκ τῆς ἀμεθόδου ὕλης τυγχάνειν, ἀπολελύκασι μὲν ἡμᾶς τῆς ἐπὶ πλεῖον πρὸς αὐτούς ἀντιρρήσεως, ὅμως δʼ οὖν ὑπέρ τοῦ μὴ ἀνεπισήμαντον παρελθεῖν τὸν τόπον οὕτως ἐρωτητέον. ἤτοι τέχνη ἐστὶν ἠ γραμματικὴ ἢ οὐκ ἐστι τέχνη. καὶ εἰ μέν οὐκ ἐστιν, αὐτόθεν συμβεβίασται τὸ προκείμενον· εἰ δὲ τέχνη ἐστίν, ἐπεὶ τὰ τῆς τέχνης μέρη πάντως ἐστὶ τεχνικά, τὸ δʼ ἱστορικὸν ἀμέθοδον ὡμολόγηται τυγχά- νειν, οὐκ ἂν εἴη τῆς γραμματικῆς μέρος τὸ ἱστορικόν.

But if it is an art, then since the parts of an art are necessarily technical, while the historical part is admitted to lack method, the historical part cannot be a part of grammar.
