καὶ μὴν οὐδέ δυσμενείας χάριν τῆς πρός τινας (μακρὰν γὰρ αὐτῶν τῆς πραότητός ἐστιν ἡ τοιαύτη κακία)· ἀλλὰ τοι- οῦτόν τι ἐπὶ τῶν μαθημάτων παθόντες ὁποῖον ἐφʼ ὅλης ἔπαθον τῆς σοφίας. καθὰ γὰρ ἐπὶ ταύτην ἦλθον πόθῳ τοῦ τυχεῖν τῆς ἀληθείας, ἰσοσθενεῖ δέ μάχῃ καὶ ἀνω- μαλία τῶν πραγμάτων ὑπαντήσαντες ἐπέσχον, οὕτω καὶ ἐπὶ τῶν μαθημάτων ὁρμήσαντες ἐπὶ τὴν ἀνάληψιν αὐτῶν, ζητοῦντες καὶ τὸ ἐνταῦθα μαθεῖν ἀληθές, τὰς δέ ἴσας εὑρόντες ἀπορίας, οὐκ ἀπεκρύψαντο.

Nor indeed was it from hostility toward certain persons, since such malice is far removed from their gentleness. Rather, their experience with the branches of learning was much like their experience with philosophy as a whole. Just as they approached philosophy from a longing to attain truth, but suspended judgment when confronted by an equipollent conflict and irregularity among things, so too, when they undertook the branches of learning in order to master them and sought to discover what is true there as well, they found equal perplexities and did not conceal them.

Ce n’est assurément pas non plus par hostilité envers certaines personnes, car une telle méchanceté est bien éloignée de leur douceur.
