For since not all people wish to be praised, nor praised for the same things, one who intends to praise well must know the disposition of the person praised. But not every impulse belonging to one person should be adopted for another. Besides, rhetoricians have handed down no method by which we shall know when and whom one ought to praise. Therefore it is impossible to praise soundly by means of rhetoric.
