Origins, practices, and debates

Christianity begins among first-century Jewish communities that recognize Jesus as Messiah and interpret his death and resurrection as decisive events. The Gospels, letters, and other New Testament writings were not written at the same time and do not serve identical purposes.

The tradition develops doctrines, liturgies, communal practices, and many families of interpretation. Prokopton42 locates each text by author, genre, and probable date. A Pauline letter is not attributed to Jesus even when it belongs to the documentary envelope for early Christianity.

Period: Since the 1st century CE
