Standing to one side, the godling Subrahmā addressed the Buddha in verse:
“This mind is always anxious,
this mind is always stressed
about stresses that haven’t arisen
and those that have.
If there is a state free of anxiety,
please answer my question.”
“Not without understanding and fervor,
not without restraining the sense faculties,
not without letting go of everything,
do I see safety for living creatures.”
That is what the Buddha said. …
The godling vanished right there.

2. Anāthapiṇḍikavagga
Subrahmasutta
Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho subrahmā devaputto bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
“Niccaṁ utrastamidaṁ cittaṁ,
niccaṁ ubbiggamidaṁ mano;
Anuppannesu kicchesu,
atho uppatitesu ca;
Sace atthi anutrastaṁ,
taṁ me akkhāhi pucchito”ti.
“Nāññatra bojjhā tapasā,
nāññatrindriyasaṁvarā;
Nāññatra sabbanissaggā,
sotthiṁ passāmi pāṇinan”ti.

Debout sur le côté, le jeune dieu Subrahmā s’adressa en vers au Bouddha :
« Cet esprit est toujours anxieux,
cet esprit est toujours accablé
par les tourments qui ne sont pas encore apparus
et par ceux qui sont apparus.
S’il existe un état libre d’anxiété,
veuillez répondre à ma question. »
« Sans compréhension ni ferveur,
sans maîtrise des facultés sensorielles,
sans renoncement à toute chose,
je ne vois aucune sécurité pour les êtres vivants. »
Voilà ce que dit le Bouddha. …
Le jeune dieu disparut sur-le-champ.
