On Divination Passage 63

Passage 63 of 284

Canonical reference 1.63

Latin

perseus-cicero-de_divinatione-lat

Therefore, when sleep withdraws the soul from association and contact with the body, it remembers the past, perceives the present, and foresees the future. The sleeper's body lies as if dead, but the soul is vigorous and alive. It will do this far more after death, when it has wholly departed from the body. Consequently, as death approaches, it becomes much more divine. Those suffering from a grave and mortal illness perceive that death is at hand. Images of the dead therefore very often come before them, and then above all they strive for honor, while those who have lived otherwise than they ought feel the greatest remorse for their sins.
