The force that opposes the pleasure in looking and may eventually be overcome by it is shame (just as disgust was previously).
Sadism and masochism.
The inclination to inflict pain upon the sexual object, and its counterpart, together constituting the most frequent and significant of all perversions, were named by von Krafft-Ebing, in their two forms, active and passive, sadism and masochism (passive). Other authors prefer the narrower term algolagnia, which emphasizes pleasure in pain and cruelty, whereas the names chosen by von Krafft-Ebing bring pleasure in every kind of humiliation and subjection to the foreground.
For active algolagnia, sadism, its roots in the normal can readily be demonstrated. The sexuality of most men contains an admixture of aggression, an inclination to overpower, whose biological significance probably lies in the necessity of overcoming the resistance of the sexual object by means other than the acts of courtship. Sadism would then correspond to an aggressive component of the sexual instinct that has become independent, exaggerated, and, through displacement, brought into the principal position.
In ordinary usage, the concept of sadism ranges from a merely active, then violent, attitude toward the sexual object to an exclusive dependence of satisfaction upon the object's subjection and maltreatment. Strictly speaking, only the latter extreme case has a claim to the name of a perversion.
Similarly, the designation masochism comprises all passive attitudes toward sexual life and the sexual object, the most extreme of which appears when satisfaction is made dependent upon suffering physical or mental pain at the hands of the sexual object. Masochism as a perversion seems to depart further from the normal sexual aim than does its counterpart. It may be doubted whether it ever occurs primarily, or whether instead it regularly arises through a transformation of sadism. It can often be recognized that masochism is nothing other than a continuation of sadism turned against one's own person, who in the first instance takes the place of the sexual object. Clinical analysis of extreme cases of masochistic perversion points to the combined operation of a great number of factors that exaggerate and fix the original passive sexual attitude. (Castration complex, sense of guilt.)
The pain that is overcome here takes its place alongside disgust and shame, which had opposed the libido as resistances.
Sadism and masochism occupy a special position among the perversions, since the opposition between activity and passivity underlying them belongs to the general characteristics of sexual life.
