The Interpretation of Dreams Section section-0114

Wahrscheinlich war auch die Spritze nicht rein. Noch ein Vorwurf gegen Otto, der aber anderswoher stammt. Gestern traf ich zufällig den Sohn einer 82 jährigen Dame, der ich täglich zwei Morphiuminjektionen geben muß. Sie ist gegenwärtig auf dem Lande und ich hörte über sie, daß sie an einer Venenentzündung leide. Ich dachte sofort daran, es handle sich um ein Infiltrat durch Verunreinigung der Spritze. Es ist mein Stolz, daß ich ihr in zwei Jahren nicht ein einziges Infiltrat gemacht habe; es ist freilich meine beständige Sorge, ob die Spritze auch rein ist. Ich bin eben gewissenhaft. Von der Venenentzündung komme ich wieder auf meine Frau, die in einer Schwangerschaft an Venenstauungen gelitten, und nun tauchen in meiner Erinnerung drei ähnliche Situationen, mit meiner Frau, mit Irma und der verstorbenen Mathilde auf, deren Identität mir offenbar das Recht gegeben hat, die drei Personen im Traume füreinander einzusetzen.

Bedeutung des Traumes von Irmas Injektion.

Ich habe nun die Traumdeutung vollendet (38) . Während dieser Arbeit hatte ich Mühe, mich all der Einfälle zu erwehren, zu denen der Vergleich zwischen dem Trauminhalt und den dahinter versteckten Traumgedanken die Anregung geben mußte. Auch ist mir unterdes der »Sinn« des Traumes aufgegangen. Ich habe eine Absicht gemerkt, welche durch den Traum verwirklicht wird, und die das Motiv des Träumens gewesen sein muß. Der Traum erfüllt einige Wünsche, welche durch die Ereignisse des letzten Abends (die Nachricht Ottos, die Niederschrift der Krankengeschichte) in mir rege gemacht worden sind. Das Ergebnis des Traumes ist nämlich, daß ich nicht schuld bin an dem noch vorhandenen Leiden Irmas, und daß Otto daran schuld ist. Nun hat mich Otto durch seine Bemerkung über Irmas unvollkommene Heilung geärgert; der Traum rächt mich an ihm, indem er den Vorwurf gegen ihn selbst zurückwendet. Von der Verantwortung für Irmas Befinden spricht der Traum mich frei, indem er dasselbe auf andere Momente (gleich eine ganze Reihe von Begründungen) zurückführt. Der Traum stellt einen gewissen Sachverhalt so dar, wie ich ihn wünschen möchte; sein Inhalt ist also eine Wunscherfüllung, sein Motiv ein Wunsch .

Probably the syringe was not clean either. Another reproach against Otto, but one that comes from elsewhere. Yesterday I happened to meet the son of an eighty-two-year-old lady to whom I have to give two morphine injections daily. She is presently in the country, and I heard that she was suffering from phlebitis. I immediately thought that it must be an infiltration caused by contamination of the syringe. It is a source of pride to me that in two years I have not caused her a single infiltration; though I am, of course, constantly concerned whether the syringe is clean. I am conscientious, after all. From the phlebitis I return to my wife, who suffered from venous congestion during one pregnancy, and now three similar situations emerge in my memory, involving my wife, Irma, and the deceased Mathilde. Their identity has evidently given me the right to substitute the three persons for one another in the dream.

Meaning of the Dream of Irma’s Injection.

I have now completed the interpretation of the dream (38). During this work I had difficulty warding off all the ideas that the comparison between the dream-content and the dream-thoughts concealed behind it was bound to stimulate. In the meantime, the “meaning” of the dream has also dawned upon me. I have detected an intention that is realized by the dream and that must have been the motive for dreaming. The dream fulfills several wishes that had been stirred within me by the events of the previous evening (Otto’s report and my writing of the case history). The outcome of the dream is, namely, that I am not to blame for Irma’s continuing illness, and that Otto is to blame for it. Now Otto had annoyed me by his remark about Irma’s incomplete recovery; the dream avenges me upon him by turning the reproach back against him. The dream absolves me of responsibility for Irma’s condition by attributing it to other factors (a whole series of explanations, in fact). The dream represents a particular state of affairs as I should wish it to be; its content is therefore a wish-fulfillment, and its motive a wish.

Il est probable aussi que la seringue n’était pas propre. Encore un reproche contre Otto, mais qui provient d’ailleurs. Hier, j’ai rencontré par hasard le fils d’une dame de quatre-vingt-deux ans à laquelle je dois faire chaque jour deux injections de morphine. Elle est actuellement à la campagne, et j’ai appris qu’elle souffrait d’une phlébite. J’ai aussitôt pensé qu’il s’agissait d’un infiltrat causé par la contamination de la seringue. Je suis fier de ne lui avoir causé aucun infiltrat en deux ans ; il est vrai que je me soucie constamment de savoir si la seringue est bien propre. Je suis précisément consciencieux. De la phlébite, j’en reviens à ma femme, qui a souffert de congestions veineuses pendant une grossesse, et voici que surgissent dans mon souvenir trois situations semblables, concernant ma femme, Irma et la défunte Mathilde, dont l’identité m’a manifestement donné le droit de substituer dans le rêve ces trois personnes les unes aux autres.

Signification du rêve de l’injection faite à Irma.

J’ai maintenant achevé l’interprétation du rêve (38). Au cours de ce travail, j’ai eu du mal à repousser toutes les idées auxquelles la comparaison entre le contenu du rêve et les pensées du rêve dissimulées derrière lui devait nécessairement donner naissance. Entre-temps, le « sens » du rêve m’est lui aussi apparu. J’ai discerné une intention que le rêve accomplit et qui a dû constituer le motif du rêve. Le rêve réalise certains souhaits éveillés en moi par les événements de la soirée précédente (la nouvelle apportée par Otto, la rédaction de l’histoire de la maladie). Le résultat du rêve est en effet que je ne suis pas responsable des souffrances persistantes d’Irma et qu’Otto en est responsable. Or Otto m’a irrité par sa remarque sur la guérison imparfaite d’Irma ; le rêve me venge de lui en retournant contre lui-même le reproche. Le rêve me décharge de la responsabilité de l’état d’Irma en ramenant celui-ci à d’autres facteurs, et même à toute une série de causes. Le rêve représente une certaine situation telle que je souhaiterais qu’elle fût ; son contenu est donc l’accomplissement d’un souhait, son motif est un souhait.
