The Interpretation of Dreams Section section-0132

This could be a generally valid insight. As the examples in Section III have shown, there are indeed dreams that are undisguised wish fulfilments. Wherever the wish fulfilment is unrecognizable, disguised, there must be a tendency to defend against this wish, and as a consequence of this defense the wish could not express itself otherwise than in distorted form. I shall seek in social life a counterpart to this occurrence in inner psychical life. Where in social life does one find a similar distortion of a psychical act? Only where two persons are concerned, one of whom possesses a certain power while the second, on account of this power, must show consideration. This second person then distorts his psychical acts or, as we may also say, dissembles. The politeness I practise every day is in large part such a dissimulation. When I interpret my dreams for the reader, I am compelled to make distortions of this kind. The poet too laments the compulsion to such distortion:

“The best of what you may know, you still may not tell the boys.”

The political writer who has unpleasant truths to tell those in power finds himself in a similar position. If he states them openly, the ruler will suppress his utterance, after the event if it is an oral utterance, preventively if it is to be made known through print. The writer has reason to fear censorship, and therefore moderates and distorts the expression of his opinion. Depending on the strength and sensitivity of this censorship, he finds himself compelled either merely to observe certain forms of attack, or to speak in allusions instead of direct designations, or he must conceal his objectionable communication behind an apparently harmless disguise. He may, for example, tell of incidents between two mandarins in the Middle Kingdom while having the officials of his own country in mind. The more strictly censorship holds sway, the more extensive the disguise becomes, and often the more ingenious the means that nevertheless put the reader on the track of the true meaning.
