Overdetermination.
To resolve this difficulty, we may make use of another impression received during the investigation of the overdetermination of the dream-content. Perhaps some readers of this investigation have already concluded that the overdetermination of the dream-elements is no significant discovery because it is self-evident. In analysis, after all, one starts from the dream-elements and records all the associations attached to them; it is no wonder, then, that these very elements recur with particular frequency in the material of thoughts obtained in this way. I could not accept this objection, but I shall myself raise a point that sounds somewhat similar: among the thoughts brought to light by analysis, many are found that stand further from the core of the dream and look like artificial interpolations made for a particular purpose. Their purpose is easily revealed; it is precisely they that establish a connection, often a forced and contrived connection, between the dream-content and the dream-thoughts, and if these elements were eliminated from the analysis, the components of the dream-content would often lose not only their overdetermination but any sufficient determination by the dream-thoughts at all. We are thus led to conclude that the multiple determination that decides what is selected for the dream is probably not always a primary factor in dream formation, but often a secondary result of a psychical force still unknown to us. Nevertheless, it must be significant for the entry of individual elements into the dream, for we can observe that it is produced with a certain expenditure of effort where it does not arise unaided from the dream-material.
The thought now readily suggests itself that a psychical force manifests itself in the dream-work which, on the one hand, strips elements of high psychical value of their intensity and, on the other, by way of overdetermination, creates new values out of elements of low value, which then enter the dream-content. If this is what takes place, then in dream formation there has occurred a transference and displacement of the psychical intensities of the individual elements, as a result of which the textual difference between dream-content and dream-thoughts appears. The process we are thus supposing is nothing less than the essential part of the dream-work; it deserves the name dream-displacement. Dream-displacement and dream-condensation are the two master craftsmen to whose activity we may chiefly attribute the form assumed by the dream.

Leur but apparaît facilement.
