For the present, then, it remains the case that the logical relations between the dream-thoughts receive no special representation in the dream. Where, for example, a contradiction occurs in the dream, it is either a contradiction directed against the dream or a contradiction arising from the content of one of the dream-thoughts; only in the most indirect and mediated manner does a contradiction in the dream correspond to a contradiction between the dream-thoughts.
But just as painting eventually succeeded in expressing at least the intended speech of the persons depicted, such as tenderness, threat, warning, and the like, by means other than a fluttering label, so the dream too has acquired the possibility of taking account of some of the logical relations among its dream-thoughts through an appropriate modification of the distinctive form of dream-representation. Experience shows that different dreams go to different lengths in this respect. While one dream completely disregards the logical structure of its material, another seeks to indicate it as fully as possible. In this regard, the dream departs to a greater or lesser extent from the text presented to it for elaboration. Incidentally, the dream behaves with similar variability toward the temporal structure of the dream-thoughts, if such a structure has been established in the unconscious, as, for example, in the dream of Irma’s injection.
By what means, then, can the dream-work indicate relations in the dream-material that are difficult to represent? I shall attempt to enumerate them individually.
First of all, the dream does justice in general to the undeniably existing connection among all the parts of the dream-thoughts by uniting this material into a single situation or event. It reproduces logical connection as simultaneity; in doing so, it proceeds like the painter who assembles all the philosophers or poets into a picture of the School of Athens or Parnassus. They were never together in a hall or on a mountaintop, but for reflective contemplation they do form a community.
The dream carries this mode of representation into detail. Whenever it shows two elements close together, it guarantees a particularly intimate connection between their counterparts in the dream-thoughts. It is as in our system of writing: ab means that the two letters are to be pronounced in one syllable, while a and b separated by a blank space show a to be the last letter of one word and b the first letter of another. Accordingly, dream-combinations are not formed from arbitrary, wholly disparate components of the dream-material, but from components that are also more intimately connected in the dream-thoughts.
