was ich in folgender Form darzustellen gewohnt bin:

But where the narrator, in reproducing the dream, would like to use an either-or: It was either a garden or a living room, etc., what occurs in the dream-thoughts is not an alternative but an “and,” a simple sequence. By either-or we generally describe a quality of vagueness in a dream-element that can still be resolved. The rule of interpretation in such a case is: The individual terms of the apparent alternative are to be treated as equal and connected by “and.” For example, after waiting a long time in vain for the address of my friend who is staying in Italy, I dream that I receive a telegram giving me this address. I see it printed in blue on the strip of telegram paper; the first word is blurred,

The second word, which sounds like Italian names and reminds me of our etymological discussions, also expresses my annoyance that he has kept his whereabouts secret from me for so long; each term of the threefold proposal for the first word, however, can be recognized in the analysis as an independent point of departure of equal standing for the chain of thoughts.

On the night before my father’s funeral, I dream of a printed board, a poster, or a notice, rather like the notices proclaiming the smoking prohibition in railway waiting rooms, on which one can read either:

or

which I am accustomed to represent in the following form:

Each of the two versions has its own particular meaning and leads along particular paths in the interpretation of the dream. I had chosen the simplest possible ceremonial because I knew what the deceased had thought of such arrangements. Other members of the family, however, did not agree with such puritanical simplicity; they thought we would have to feel ashamed before the funeral guests. Hence one wording of the dream asks that “one eye be closed,” that is, that forbearance be shown. The meaning of the vagueness that we described with an either-or is particularly easy to grasp here. The dream-work did not succeed in producing a unified wording for the dream-thoughts that would at the same time be ambiguous. Thus the two principal trains of thought are separated from one another even in the dream-content.

In some cases, the division of the dream into two equally large parts expresses the alternative that is so difficult to represent.
