d) Die Rücksicht auf Darstellbarkeit .

Wir haben es bisher mit der Untersuchung zu tun gehabt, wie der Traum die Relationen zwischen den Traumgedanken darstellt, griffen dabei aber mehrfach auf das weitere Thema zurück, welche Veränderung das Traummaterial überhaupt für die Zwecke der Traumbildung erfährt. Wir wissen nun, daß das Traummaterial, seiner Relationen zum guten Teile entblößt, einer Kompression unterliegt, während gleichzeitig Intensitätsverschiebungen zwischen seinen Elementen eine psychische Umwertung dieses Materials erzwingen. Die Verschiebungen, die wir berücksichtigt haben, erwiesen sich als Ersetzungen einer bestimmten Vorstellung durch eine andere ihr in der Assoziation irgendwie nahestehende und sie wurden der Verdichtung dienstbar gemacht, indem auf solche Weise anstatt zweier Elemente ein mittleres Gemeinsames zwischen ihnen zur Aufnahme in den Traum gelangte. Von einer anderen Art der Verschiebung haben wir noch keine Erwähnung getan. Aus den Analysen erfährt man aber, daß eine solche besteht und daß sie sich in einer Vertauschung des sprachlichen Ausdruckes für den betreffenden Gedanken kundgibt. Es handelt sich beidemale um Verschiebung längs einer Assoziationskette, aber der gleiche Vorgang findet in verschiedenen psychischen Sphären statt, und das Ergebnis dieser Verschiebung ist das einemal, daß ein Element durch ein anderes substituiert wird, während im anderen Falle ein Element seine Wortfassung gegen eine andere vertauscht.

d) Considerations of Representability.

So far we have been concerned with investigating how the dream represents the relations between the dream-thoughts, but in doing so we have repeatedly returned to the broader question of what transformation the dream-material undergoes in general for the purposes of dream-formation. We now know that the dream-material, largely stripped of its relations, is subjected to compression, while at the same time displacements of intensity among its elements compel a psychical revaluation of this material. The displacements we have considered proved to be replacements of one particular idea by another that is in some way close to it in association, and they were made to serve condensation, since in this way, instead of two elements, something intermediate and common to both gained admission to the dream. We have not yet mentioned another kind of displacement. Analyses show, however, that such a kind exists and manifests itself in an exchange of the linguistic expression for the thought in question. In both cases there is displacement along a chain of associations, but the same process takes place in different psychical spheres, and the result of this displacement is in one case that one element is substituted for another, while in the other an element exchanges its verbal formulation for a different one.

d) La prise en considération de la figurabilité.

Nous nous sommes occupés jusqu’ici d’examiner comment le rêve représente les relations entre les pensées du rêve, mais nous avons à plusieurs reprises abordé le thème plus vaste de la transformation que subit le matériel du rêve en général aux fins de la formation du rêve. Nous savons maintenant que le matériel du rêve, dépouillé d’une grande partie de ses relations, est soumis à une compression, tandis que, simultanément, des déplacements d’intensité entre ses éléments imposent une réévaluation psychique de ce matériel. Les déplacements que nous avons pris en considération se sont révélés être des substitutions d’une représentation déterminée par une autre qui lui est, d’une manière ou d’une autre, proche dans l’association; ils ont été mis au service de la condensation, puisque, de cette façon, au lieu de deux éléments, c’est un terme moyen qui leur est commun qui a été admis dans le rêve. Nous n’avons encore fait mention d’aucune autre sorte de déplacement. Mais les analyses nous apprennent qu’il en existe une et qu’elle se manifeste par un échange de l’expression verbale de la pensée concernée. Dans les deux cas, il s’agit d’un déplacement le long d’une chaîne associative, mais le même processus se déroule dans des sphères psychiques différentes; le résultat de ce déplacement est, dans un cas, qu’un élément est remplacé par un autre, tandis que, dans l’autre, un élément échange sa formulation verbale contre une autre.
