A symbol of particular importance for understanding dreams as well as myths and fairy tales is the representation of parents as imperial or otherwise highly placed persons. The daydreams of a “family romance” that serve the individual’s ambitious fantasies have made it possible to understand the corresponding mass fantasies of entire peoples and have taught us to recognize personifications of the father in the powerful figures opposed to the hero, and imagos of the mother in the women whom these figures withhold from him. The king and queen of whom almost every fairy tale has something to tell seldom disavow their parental character, and the heroic myth employs the same means of representation so that the ambivalent impulses directed toward the parents may be acted out without reproach.
