If we now recall the role played in the dream-thoughts by infantile experiences or the fantasies founded upon them, how frequently fragments of them reappear in the dream-content, and how often the dream-wishes themselves are derived from them, we shall not reject the probability that in dreams too the transformation of thoughts into visual images may be partly the result of the attraction exerted upon the thought, struggling for expression and cut off from consciousness, by the visually represented memory striving for revival. According to this view, the dream could also be described as a substitute for the infantile scene, modified by transference onto something recent. The infantile scene cannot secure its own renewal; it must content itself with returning as a dream.
Regression explained by the attraction of infantile scenes.
