I, 1909, und »Über infantile Sexualtheorien« in Sammlung kl. Schriften z. Neurosenlehre, zweite Folge.

(78) The superimposition of meanings in dreams is one of the most delicate, but also one of the most fruitful, problems of dream-interpretation. Anyone who forgets this possibility will easily go astray and be led to make untenable assertions about the nature of dreams. Yet far too few investigations of this subject have been undertaken. So far, only the fairly regular layering of symbols in dreams prompted by the need to urinate has received a thorough appreciation from O. Rank (see below, p. 291).

(79) I should advise everyone to read through Mourly Vold’s detailed and exact records of experimentally induced dreams, collected in two volumes, in order to be convinced how little the content of the individual dream is elucidated by the stated experimental conditions and how little use such experiments are in general for understanding the problems of dreams.

(80) Compare the passage in Griesinger and the observation in my second essay on the defence neuropsychoses, Neurologisches Zentralblatt, 1896.

(81) The content of this dream is not recounted consistently in the two sources from which I know it.

(82) (and the “secondary revision” to be mentioned later).

(83) In a series of works, Rank has shown that certain awakening dreams produced by organic stimuli (dreams prompted by the need to urinate and dreams of emission) are particularly well suited to demonstrating the struggle between the need for sleep and the demands of the organic need, as well as the influence of the latter upon the dream-content.

(84) “The Emperor’s New Clothes.”

(85) The child also appears in the fairy tale, for there a small child suddenly cries out: “But he has nothing on at all.”

(86) Ferenczi has reported a number of interesting dreams of nakedness in women which could be traced without difficulty to infantile pleasure in exhibition, but which in some features diverge from the “typical” dream of nakedness treated above.

(87) For understandable reasons, the presence of the “whole family” in a dream means the same thing.

(88) An over-interpretation of this dream: spitting on the stairs, since “spitting” is an activity of spirits, led by a loose translation to the “esprit d’escalier.” Treppenwitz means something like a lack of ready wit. I really must reproach myself for that. But did the nurse lack “ready wit”?

(89) Cf. in this connection: Analysis of a Phobia in a Five-Year-Old Boy in the Jahrbuch für psychoanalytische und psychopathologische Forschungen, vol. I, 1909, and “On the Sexual Theories of Children” in Sammlung kleiner Schriften zur Neurosenlehre, second series.

Schriften z. Neurosenlehre, deuxième série.
