11. It seems to me that people everywhere are now endeavoring to divert attention from the actual influence Kant exerted upon German philosophy and, in particular, discreetly to slip past the value he assigned to himself. Kant was above all and from the first proud of his table of categories; with this table in his hands he said: “This is the most difficult thing that could ever have been undertaken for the purposes of metaphysics.” Let this “could have been” be properly understood! He was proud of having discovered in man a new faculty, the faculty of synthetic judgments a priori. Granted that he deceived himself in this: but the development and rapid flowering of German philosophy depend upon this pride and upon the competition among all the younger thinkers to discover, if possible, something still prouder, and in any case “new faculties”! But let us reflect: it is time. How are synthetic judgments a priori possible? Kant asked himself, and what did he actually answer? By virtue of a faculty: unfortunately, however, not in three words, but so circumstantially, venerably, and with such an expenditure of German profundity and ornamental ingenuity that people failed to hear the amusing niaiserie allemande contained in such an answer. People were even beside themselves over this new faculty, and the jubilation reached its height when Kant went on to discover a moral faculty in man as well; for at that time the Germans were still moral and not yet at all “Realpolitical.” The honeymoon of German philosophy arrived; all the young theologians of the Tübingen seminary immediately went into the bushes, all searching for “faculties.” And what did they not find in that innocent, rich, still youthful age of the German spirit, into which Romanticism, the malicious fairy, breathed and sang, at a time when people did not yet know how to distinguish “finding” from “inventing”! Above all, a faculty for the “supersensible”: Schelling christened it intellectual intuition and thereby gratified the most heartfelt cravings of his Germans, who at bottom craved piety. One can do no greater injustice to this whole high-spirited and rapturous movement, which was youth, however boldly it disguised itself in gray and senile concepts, than to take it seriously and perhaps even treat it with moral indignation; enough, people grew older, and the dream vanished. A time came when people rubbed their foreheads: they are still rubbing them today. They had been dreaming, foremost and first of all old Kant. “By virtue of a faculty,” he had said, or at least meant. But is that an answer? An explanation? Or is it not rather merely a repetition of the question? How does opium induce sleep? “By virtue of a faculty,” namely the virtus dormitiva, answers that physician in Molière, quia est in eo virtus dormitiva, cujus est natura sensus assoupire. But answers of this kind belong in comedy, and it is finally time to replace the Kantian question “How are synthetic judgments a priori possible?” with another question: “Why is belief in such judgments necessary?” That is, to understand that, for the purpose of preserving beings of our kind, such judgments must be believed true; for which reason, of course, they might still be false judgments! Or, to speak more clearly, coarsely, and fundamentally: synthetic judgments a priori ought not to be “possible” at all; we have no right to them, in our mouths they are nothing but false judgments. Yet belief in their truth is indeed necessary as a foreground belief and ocular evidence belonging to the perspectival optics of life. Finally, to recall the tremendous effect that “German philosophy,” one understands, I hope, its claim to quotation marks? has exerted throughout Europe, let no one doubt that a certain virtus dormitiva was involved: noble idlers, virtuous people, mystics, artists, three-quarter Christians, and political obscurantists of every nation were delighted, thanks to German philosophy, to possess an antidote to the still overwhelmingly powerful sensualism that flowed over from the previous century into this one, in short, “sensus assoupire”.....
