231. Learning transforms us; it does what all nourishment does, which likewise does not merely “preserve,” as the physiologist knows. But at the bottom of us, quite “down there,” there is indeed something unteachable, a granite of spiritual fatum, of predetermined decision and answer to predetermined, selected questions. With every cardinal problem, an immutable “that is what I am” speaks; about man and woman, for example, a thinker cannot relearn, but only finish learning, only discover to the end what about them is “fixed” in him. From time to time we find certain solutions to problems that inspire especially strong belief in us; perhaps from then on we call them our “convictions.” Later, we see in them only footprints toward self-knowledge, signposts toward the problem that we are, or, more correctly, toward the great stupidity that we are, toward our spiritual fatum, toward what is unteachable quite “down there.” After this ample courtesy which I have just shown myself, I may perhaps be more readily permitted to utter a few truths about “woman in herself,” provided that it is now known from the outset how very much they are only my truths.
