140. Having found, in many of the actions more difficult to explain, expressions of that pleasure in emotion itself, I should also like to see in self-contempt, which is one of the marks of holiness, and likewise in acts of self-torment (through hunger and scourging, dislocation of the limbs, feigned madness), a means by which such natures struggle against the general exhaustion of their will to live (of their nerves): they employ the most painful stimulants and cruelties in order, at least for a time, to emerge from that dullness and boredom into which their great intellectual indolence and the submission to another’s will described above so often cause them to lapse.
