441. Subordination.

441. Subordination. The subordination so highly esteemed in the military and bureaucratic state will soon seem as incredible to us as the closed tactics of the Jesuits already do; and when this subordination is no longer possible, a multitude of the most astonishing effects can no longer be achieved, and the world will be poorer. It must disappear because its foundation is disappearing: belief in unconditional authority, in final truth. Even in military states, physical coercion is not enough to produce it; what is needed is the inherited adoration of the princely as something superhuman. In freer conditions, one submits only under certain conditions, as a result of mutual agreement, and thus with all the reservations of self-interest.

441. Subordination.
