196. Einfach leben. - Eine einfache Lebensweise ist jetzt schwer: dazu thut viel mehr Nachdenken und Erfindungsgabe noth, als selbst sehr gescheute Leute haben. Der Ehrlichste von ihnen wird vielleicht noch sagen: „ich habe nicht die Zeit, darüber so lange nachzudenken. Die einfache Lebensweise ist für mich ein zu vornehmes Ziel; ich will warten, bis Weisere, als ich bin, sie gefunden haben.“

196. Living Simply. A simple way of life is difficult now: it requires much more reflection and inventiveness than even very clever people possess. The most honest among them might still say: "I do not have the time to think about it for so long. The simple way of life is too noble a goal for me; I shall wait until wiser people than I have discovered it."

196. Vivre simplement. Un mode de vie simple est aujourd’hui difficile : il exige beaucoup plus de réflexion et d’invention que n’en possèdent même des gens très avisés. Le plus honnête d’entre eux dira peut-être encore : « je n’ai pas le temps d’y réfléchir si longtemps. Le mode de vie simple est pour moi un but trop noble ; je veux attendre que de plus sages que moi l’aient trouvé. »
