Vorwort. Die folgenden Capitel sind sämmtlich aus meinen älteren Schriften nicht ohne Vorsicht ausgewählt - einige gehn bis auf 1877 zurück - , verdeutlicht vielleicht hier und da, vor Allem verkürzt. Sie werden, hinter einander gelesen, weder über Richard Wagner, noch über mich einen Zweifel lassen: wir sind Antipoden. Man wird auch noch Andres dabei begreifen: zum Beispiel, dass dies ein Essai für Psychologen ist, aber nicht für Deutsche… Ich habe meine Leser überall, in Wien, in St. Petersburg, in Kopenhagen und Stockholm, in Paris, in New-York - ich habe sie nicht in Europa’s Flachland Deutschland… Und ich hätte vielleicht auch den Herrn Italiänern ein Wort ins Ohr zu sagen, die ich liebe, ebensosehr als ich… Quousque tandem, Crispi… Triple alliance: mit dem „Reich“ macht ein intelligentes Volk immer nur eine mésalliance… Friedrich Nietzsche. Preface. The following chapters have all been selected, not without care, from my earlier writings, some dating back as far as 1877, and perhaps clarified here and there, but above all abridged. Read one after another, they will leave no doubt either about Richard Wagner or about me: we are antipodes. Other things will also be understood in the process: for example, that this is an essay for psychologists, but not for Germans... Préface. Les chapitres qui suivent ont tous été choisis, non sans précaution, parmi mes écrits antérieurs, dont certains remontent à 1877; ils ont été peut-être clarifiés çà et là, mais surtout abrégés. Lus à la suite, ils ne laisseront subsister aucun doute ni sur Richard Wagner ni sur moi: nous sommes des antipodes. On y comprendra encore autre chose: par exemple, qu’il s’agit d’un essai pour psychologues, mais non pour Allemands… J’ai partout mes lecteurs, à Vienne, à Saint-Pétersbourg, à Copenhague et à Stockholm, à Paris, à New York; je ne les ai pas dans le plat pays de l’Europe, l’Allemagne… Et j’aurais peut-être aussi un mot à glisser à l’oreille de Messieurs les Italiens, que j’aime autant que je… Quousque tandem, Crispi… Triple alliance: avec l’«Empire», un peuple intelligent ne fait jamais qu’une mésalliance… Friedrich Nietzsche.
