Ecce altera quaestio, quomodo hominibus sit utendum. Quid agimus? Quae damus praecepta? Ut pareamus sanguini humano? Quantulum est ei non nocere, cui debeas prodesse! Magna scilicet laus est, si homo mansuetus homini est. Praecipiemus, ut naufrago manum porrigat, erranti viam monstret, cum esuriente panem suum dividat? Voici une seconde question : comment faut-il agir avec les hommes ? Qu’y répondons-nous, et quels sont nos préceptes ? Qu’on épargne le sang humain ? Combien c’est peu de ne pas nuire à qui l’on doit faire du bien ! La belle gloire en effet pour un homme de n’être point féroce envers son semblable ! Nous lui prescrivons de tendre la main au naufragé, de montrer la route à l’homme qui s’égare, de partager son pain avec celui qui a faim. Then comes the second problem, - how to deal with men. What is our purpose? What precepts do we offer? Should we bid them refrain from bloodshed? What a little thing it is not to harm one whom you ought to help! It is indeed worthy of great praise, when man treats man with kindness! Shall we advise stretching forth the hand to the shipwrecked sailor, or pointing out the way to the wanderer, or sharing a crust with the starving? Yes, if I can only tell you first everything which ought to be afforded or withheld; meantime, I can lay down for mankind a rule, in short compass, for our duties in human relationships:
