Émile Saisset or Paul Janet

Indeed, as we experience greater joy, we pass to greater perfection and consequently participate more in the divine nature. Joy can therefore never be bad so long as it is regulated by the law of our true advantage. Thus, he who knows only how to obey through fear and does good only to avoid evil is not guided by reason.
But human power is very limited, and the power of external causes infinitely surpasses it. Therefore we do not possess an absolute power to adapt external objects to our use. Nevertheless, we shall always bear with an even mind events contrary to our interests if we are conscious that we have fulfilled our duty and that the power at our disposal was not extensive enough to avert the evil. For we are only a part of nature, and we must follow the universal order. Now, as soon as we understand this clearly and distinctly, that part of our being defined by understanding, that is, the best part of ourselves, will find perfect serenity in this idea and will strive to persevere in it. For insofar as we possess understanding, we can desire only what agrees with the necessary order of things and find rest only in the truth. Consequently, once our true condition is properly known, the striving of the best part of ourselves agrees with the universal order of nature.
