Cicero

Brutus, or On Eminent Orators Passage 192

Passage 192 of 334

Canonical reference 192

Latin

perseus-cicero-brutus-lat

"What could you do, Brutus, if an assembly abandoned you as it once abandoned Curio?" "To tell you the truth about myself," he replied, "even in cases where our whole business is with the judges, not the people, I still could not speak if the surrounding audience deserted me." "That is how matters stand," I said. "Just as a flute-player thinks that inflated pipes which return no sound should be thrown away, so the ears of the people are like pipes to an orator. If they do not receive his breath, or if the hearer gives no response at all, like a horse that will not move, he must stop urging them on."
