Cicero
Brutus, or On Eminent Orators Passage 221
Passage 221 of 334
Canonical reference 221
Latin
perseus-cicero-brutus-lat
In eodem igitur numero eiusdem aetatis C. Carbo fuit illius eloquentissimi viri filius . Pomponius lateribus pugnans, incitans animos, acer acerbus criminosus.

In the same rank and of the same age was Gaius Carbo, son of that most eloquent man. He was not a sufficiently acute speaker but was nevertheless counted as an orator. His words possessed dignity, he spoke readily, and his speech had a certain natural authority. Quintus Varius was more acute in discovering arguments and no less ready with words. Gnaeus Pomponius was a courageous and vehement performer, not poor or mean in language, and a man whom one would confidently dare call an orator. He fought with the strength of his lungs, aroused minds, and was fierce, bitter, and accusatory.
