Cicero
Orator Passage 34
Passage 34 of 238
Canonical reference 34
Latin
perseus-cicero-orator-lat

For what is so far removed from austerity as affability? Yet who was ever considered either more upright or more agreeable than you? What is so difficult as to be loved by everyone while adjudicating disputes among many? Yet you contrive to dismiss in a calm and reconciled spirit the very men against whom you decide. Thus, although you do nothing for the sake of winning favor, everything you do is nevertheless received with favor. Consequently, of all lands, Gaul alone does not burn in the common conflagration. There you enjoy your own company, while being recognized and active in the full light of Italy, amid the flower and strength of its finest citizens. And how remarkable it is that amid the greatest occupations you never suspend your learned studies, but are always either writing something yourself or summoning me to write!
