Philippics Passage 12
Passage 355 of 544
Canonical reference 9.12
Latin
perseus-cicero-philippics-lat

The devotion of his son will also be seen to have contributed greatly to the father's honor. Although he is absent, crushed by grief, you ought to be disposed as though he were present. His condition is such that no one ever grieved more over the death of an only son than he mourns his father. I also believe it concerns the reputation of Servius Sulpicius the son that he be seen to have rendered the honor owed to his father. Yet Servius Sulpicius could leave no more illustrious monument than his son, an image of his character, courage, constancy, devotion, and talent. The son's grief can be relieved either by this honor from you or by no consolation at all.
