Die Schwäche dieser Lehre, die man z. B. in v.

The weakness of this doctrine, which may be found adopted, for example, in v. Krafft-Ebing’s account of the sexual processes, lies in the fact that, devised for the sexual activity of the mature man, it takes little account of three kinds of conditions for which it should likewise provide an explanation. These are the conditions in the child, the woman, and the male castrate. In all three cases, there can be no question of an accumulation of sexual products in the same sense as in the man, which makes the straightforward application of the scheme difficult. It must nevertheless be readily admitted that explanations could be found that would make it possible to subsume these cases as well. In any event, the warning remains not to burden the factor of the accumulation of sexual products with functions of which it seems incapable.

Assessment of the internal sexual organs.

Observations of male castrates appear to show that sexual excitation can be independent of the production of sexual substances to a noteworthy degree, for in them the libido occasionally escapes impairment by the operation, although the opposite outcome, which indeed motivates the operation, is the rule. Moreover, it has long been known that diseases which have destroyed the production of male germ cells leave the libido and potency of the now sterile individual unimpaired. It is therefore by no means as surprising as C. Rieger represents it that the loss of the male gonads at a more mature age may remain without further influence upon the individual’s mental behavior. Castration performed at a tender age before puberty does, it is true, approach in its effect the aim of abolishing the sexual characteristics; but here too, besides the loss of the gonads itself, an inhibition in the development of other factors connected with their removal might come into consideration.
