371. Taking On the Color of One’s Surroundings. Why are inclination and aversion so contagious that one can scarcely live near a person of strong feelings without being filled, like a vessel, with that person’s pros and cons? First, complete abstention from judgment is very difficult and at times downright intolerable to our vanity; it then has the same color as poverty of thought and feeling, or as timidity and unmanliness. Thus we are at least swept into taking sides, perhaps against the tendency of our surroundings if this position affords our pride more pleasure. Usually, however, and this is the second point, we do not become conscious at all of the transition from indifference to inclination or aversion; instead, we gradually grow accustomed to the mode of feeling of those around us, and because sympathetic agreement and mutual understanding are so pleasant, we soon wear all the insignia and party colors of these surroundings.
