Phaedo Passage 57

ΕΧ. αὐτός, ὦ Φαίδων , παρεγένου Σωκράτει ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ᾗ τὸ φάρμακον ἔπιεν ἐν τῷ δεσμωτηρίῳ, ἢ ἄλλου του ἤκουσας; ΦΑΙΔ. αὐτός, ὦ Ἐχέκρατες . ΕΧ. τί οὖν δή ἐστιν ἅττα εἶπεν ὁ ἀνὴρ πρὸ τοῦ θανάτου; καὶ πῶς ἐτελεύτα; ἡδέως γὰρ ἂν ἐγὼ ἀκούσαιμι. καὶ γὰρ οὔτε τῶν πολιτῶν Φλειασίων οὐδεὶς πάνυ τι ἐπιχωριάζει τὰ νῦν Ἀθήναζε , οὔτε τις ξένος ἀφῖκται χρόνου συχνοῦ ἐκεῖθεν ὅστις ἂν ἡμῖν σαφές τι ἀγγεῖλαι οἷός τ’ ἦν περὶ τούτων, πλήν γε δὴ ὅτι φάρμακον πιὼν ἀποθάνοι· τῶν δὲ ἄλλων οὐδὲν εἶχεν φράζειν.

Echecrates. Were you with Socrates yourself, Phaedo, on the day when he drank the poison in prison, or did you hear about it from someone else? Phaedo. I was there myself, Echecrates. Echecrates. Then what did he say before his death? and how did he die? I should like to hear, for nowadays none of the Phliasians go to Athens at all, and no stranger has come from there for a long time, who could tell us anything definite about this matter, except that he drank poison and died, so we could learn no further details.

Échécrate. Étais-tu toi-même auprès de Socrate, Phédon, le jour où il but le poison en prison, ou l’as-tu appris de quelqu’un d’autre ?

Phédon. J’y étais moi-même, Échécrate.

Échécrate. Que dit-il donc avant sa mort ? Et comment mourut-il ? J’aimerais l’entendre raconter, car de nos jours aucun Phliasien ne va plus du tout à Athènes, et depuis longtemps aucun étranger n’en est venu qui aurait pu nous apprendre quelque chose de précis à ce sujet, sinon qu’il avait bu du poison et qu’il était mort. Nous n’avons donc pu connaître aucun autre détail.
