Cicero

Orator Passage 150

Passage 150 of 238

Canonical reference 150

Latin

perseus-cicero-orator-lat

I do not want such minute construction to be visible. Yet a practiced pen will readily develop a method of composition. For just as the eye looks ahead when reading, so the mind will look ahead while speaking to what follows, lest the collision of final letters with the beginnings of succeeding words produce gaping or harsh sounds. However pleasing and weighty the thoughts may be, if they are expressed in words arranged without order, they will offend the ears, whose judgment is exceedingly proud. The Latin language observes this so carefully that no one is so rustic as to be unwilling to join vowels together.
