Cicero
On Duties Passage 3
Passage 164 of 371
Canonical reference 2.3
Latin
perseus-cicero-de_officiis-lat

Would that the state had remained in the condition it had begun to assume and had not fallen into the hands of men eager not so much to change affairs as to overthrow them! First, as we used to do while the state still stood, we would devote more effort to action than to writing. Second, we would commit to writing not the subjects we now discuss, but our own public actions, as we often did. But when the state, upon which all my care, thought, and labor had customarily been spent, no longer existed at all, those writings of the forum and senate naturally fell silent.
