Short summary
This collection gathers maxims, legal decisions, disputes, and stories attributed to Hillel by the Mishnah, Tosefta, both Talmuds, and early midrashim.
Long summary
No autograph book by Hillel survives. Words and deeds attributed to him reach us through rabbinic works compiled generations after his lifetime, from the Mishnah to narratives in the Babylonian Talmud. Every unit therefore retains its carrier, reference, and approximate compilation date. Pirkei Avot preserves productive tensions among care of self, belonging to a community, active pursuit of peace, and the urgency of action. The Mishnah associates Hillel with the prosbol; the famous one-foot teaching story belongs to the Babylonian Talmud. A carrier attests a tradition, not stenography or personal memory. The Hebrew or Aramaic text and published English version are accompanied by a working French translation clearly marked as generated.
