L’opposition aux disciplines paraît avoir été adoptée, d’une manière assez générale, aussi bien par les disciples d’Épicure (fr. 227 Us.) que par ceux de Pyrrhon, mais non dans le même esprit. Les épicuriens estimaient que les disciplines ne contribuent en rien à l’accomplissement de la sagesse, ou bien, comme certains le conjecturent, ils en faisaient un prétexte pour dissimuler leur propre inculture. Car, en maint endroit, Épicure (p. 89, 30 Us.) se révèle ignorant et ne parle même pas correctement dans la conversation ordinaire.
